All the questions. Clear answers.
Mobile security raises many questions — from employees, IT staff and management alike. Find answers to the most common ones here.
Fundamentals
What is Vyrex Mobile?+
Vyrex Mobile is an extension of the Vyrex Security platform for mobile endpoints. It consists of a companion app (Android + iOS), a mobile module in the Vyrex portal and optional integration with the VYREX EDGE appliance. The goal is to make the security status of mobile devices visible and include it in the overall risk assessment.
Who is Vyrex Mobile for?+
For mid-market businesses that have BYOD devices or company phones in use and need to include them in their security strategy — without the overhead and privacy risks of a classic MDM.
Is Vyrex Mobile an antivirus?+
No. Vyrex Mobile does not scan files, block apps or interfere with device processes. It collects security signals and makes them visible — the security decision stays with the human.
Which packages include Vyrex Mobile?+
Vyrex Mobile is included in the Compliance and Transformation packages. For Operations package customers it is bookable as an extension module. Basis customers can enquire about Mobile as a separate add-on.
Do I also need the VYREX EDGE appliance?+
No. The companion app and portal module work independently. VYREX EDGE is an optional extension that expands visibility to devices without the app. EDGE is recommended for complete network visibility.
Privacy & BYOD
What does my employer see on my personal device?+
Exclusively security-relevant signals: device name, platform, OS version, screen lock status, encryption, last check-in and risk score. No apps, no messages, no location (except voluntary incident mode), no personal data.
Can I withdraw my consent?+
Yes, at any time in the companion app. After withdrawal, the device is removed from the portal and all collected data is deleted after the contractually defined retention period.
Can my employer force me to enroll?+
The employer can define enrollment as a prerequisite for accessing company resources via BYOD. However, consent to data collection must be voluntary — no disadvantage may result from refusal where no contractual BYOD obligation exists.
Where is my data stored?+
Exclusively on German servers operated by Vyrex (Rhine-Main region). No data is transferred to the United States or other third countries.
Can Vyrex Mobile remotely wipe my device?+
No. Vyrex Mobile has no remote wipe function. The only exception is the voluntary device lock opt-in in incident mode, which requires explicit confirmation in the app.
Technical & Platforms
Which operating systems are supported?+
Android 10 and above, and iOS 15 and above. The Android version fully supports all core signals. On iOS, individual system signals are restricted by the iOS sandbox and are labelled accordingly.
Do I need root or jailbreak for the app?+
No. The companion app runs on standard devices without root or jailbreak. On non-jailbroken devices, signal coverage is more complete because no security mechanisms have been bypassed.
How much storage and battery does the app use?+
The companion app is lightweight. It transmits signals in batches, not as a real-time stream. In normal operation, battery and data consumption is comparable to an email app.
Does the app work without an internet connection?+
The app collects signals offline. As soon as a connection is available, the collected data is transmitted. Extended offline periods generate an inactivity alert in the portal.
Can the app be managed by an MDM?+
Yes, the companion app can be pre-configured and distributed via standard MDM mechanisms (AppConfig, Managed Configuration) — e.g. for company devices already managed by an MDM.
Compliance & Reports
Does Vyrex Mobile help with NIS-2 compliance?+
Yes. Vyrex Mobile supports the documentation and monitoring of mobile endpoints in accordance with Article 21 of the NIS-2 Directive. Compliance reports include a NIS-2 mapping. Full NIS-2 compliance additionally requires organisational measures, which are covered by the Vyrex Compliance package.
How often can reports be generated?+
At any time. Ad-hoc reports can be generated for any time period. Automated reports can be delivered daily, weekly or monthly by email.
Are reports understandable for external auditors?+
Yes, this is an explicit design goal. The compliance report includes a brief introduction to the metrics used and a glossary. The leadership report is designed to be readable by non-IT professionals.
Can I export report data to my own systems?+
Yes. In addition to PDF export, a JSON API is available through which report data can be transferred to other systems (SIEM, compliance tools, DMS).
Onboarding & Integration
How long does a Vyrex Mobile rollout take?+
The portal module is activated within the regular Vyrex onboarding — no separate setup effort. The companion app can be made available to employees immediately. A full BYOD rollout for 50 devices typically takes one week including communication.
Do I need an MDM server for the rollout?+
No. For BYOD devices, the companion app and a QR code are sufficient. For company devices already managed by an MDM, the app can be distributed as a managed app — but this is not required.
How are employees informed about privacy?+
Vyrex provides a consent document and a brief employee info sheet that can be integrated into internal communications. The document clearly explains which data is collected and which is not.
Can Vyrex Mobile be integrated into our existing SIEM?+
Yes, via webhooks and the Vyrex API. Mobile findings can be forwarded to external SIEM systems, ticketing systems or alerting platforms.
